EVENTS

The Long Night of Science is a biennial outreach event in Germany during which all publicly funded research institutions open their doors to the public for an after-hours open house. 2017 was the first year in which the newly founded Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History participated, and we hosted more than 500 visitors. The Warinner Group contributed and coordinated four activities aimed at participants from pre-school age to adults, including:

  • Science Portrait Studio: Dress up like an field archaeologist or a laboratory scientist in our portrait studio and choose one of our many backdrop photos selected from real excavation sites and our state-of-the-art ancient DNA laboratory. All ages
  • Coloring Book Corner: Join us on an adventure through the archaeological sciences using our “Adventures in Archaeological Science” coloring book featuring real research taking place at the MPI-SHH. All pages were drawn by scientists at the MPI-SHH. Ages 2+
  • Animalcules!: Reenact Antoni van Leeuwenhoek’s discovery of the microscopic world around us using microscopes and foldscopes. Explore poppy seeds, insect wings, and even your own dental plaque!
  • Extract Your Own DNA: Join our team of technicians and PhD students to learn how you can extract strawberry DNA – so much you can actually see and hold it – right in your own kitchen using 100% edible supplies. For participants over 18 years of age, you can even give this DNA cocktail a taste-test! Age 5+ to extract, age 18+ to taste
